Postal Cakes

In the last year, the increase of things that we can get in the post has skyrocketed, one of them being the increase in food businesses adapting to nationwide delivery. In the name of research, I have tried a fair few over the last year and here is a round-up of some of my favourite - you can always count on me to be doing the hard work for you. 

Dee’s Basement 

Not only do Dee’s bakes taste good, but they also look incredible! From the hand-painted madeleines to the new floral Bento box cake, it’s a good looking delivery day when a Dee’s basement box arrives. As I went to the postal page to get the link, I realised I’ve tried quite a few and can recommend: the cookies, the crumb cake and sprinkle tray bakes too. Essentially, it’s all good! If you live local to Walthamstow, you can also choose a bespoke cake option too, one day, one day. 

Fig & Firefly 

I was going to start this sentence with ‘not only do these cakes look good, but they taste good too.’ Can you sense a theme?! It’s so important. I’ve been fooled by a lot of good looking bakes before, all frilly icing swirls and no substance. I found Fig & Firefly on TikTok and now have a mini love affair with every cake I order. The super cute iced cakes are some of the lightest and softest sponge you’ll ever taste. Notonthehighstreet 

I hadn’t thought about buying cakes from here before, I worked with them on a sponsored post and did a selection of sweet treats and paired them up with complementary crockery, one of the best briefs I’ve ever set myself that’s for sure. I discovered lots of small brands, I think the chocolate covered Oreo love hearts have to be my favourite, followed by these pink lemonade cakes which I, unfortunately, had to order a second set of as I left one to melt on the radiator. If you love sugar cookies, then I would definitely take a look at Honeywell Bakes.

All Day Cake 

As May approaches, I can’t wait to finally order a postal birthday cake from Sophie, I’ve honestly been waiting for over six months.… I really need to get out more. Launched in lockdown last year, All Day Cake is based in Manchester and makes some of the best tasting sweet treats I’ve ever tasted. Sophie is a trained pastry chef and you can taste that level of precision in the way she combines flavours together, and I’d definitely throw in a jar of cake praline on your order if you can. Collection orders within Manchester will open up again in May. 

Bettys 

Just in case you’ve never heard me go on about Betty’s, or heard my mum go on about it, or my three-year-old child…we are big fans of Betty’s in this house and have been for generations. My grandma was called Betty, she only drank their tea and the day they opened mail order was a big day in this house. You can get their infamous Fondant Fancies, which I think is my favourite ever cake, and Fat Rascals sent nationwide. It’s a small but classic selection, always good to book in a delivery ahead of time, as it can get especially busy near Easter and Christmas. 

Blushing Cook 

Do one thing and do it well, that’s what Sammi-Jo Gascoyne of The Blushing Cook does. Originally Sammi worked on beautiful pressed flower celebration cakes, but like so many during the pandemic has had to pivot her business. Now you can get floral brownies and shortbreads delivered to your door with as little as 48 hours notice. Since pivoting, and introducing the original chocolate option there are new flavours of brownies, including white chocolate and raspberry, plus both gluten-free and vegan options.
